Roland S. Carlton, Jr. is the Senior Partner at Carlton Legal Services, PLC. He is a Virginia native and has lived in several locations across Virginia throughout his lifetime. He graduated magna cum laude from Salem High School, Salem, Virginia, in 1980. He studied business and computer programming at James Madison University from 1980 through 1984, he was elected into the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society, and he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, magna cum laude, in 1984 with a double major in Management and Management Information Systems and with a minor in data processing. After college graduation, Mr. Carlton worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst on an IBM mainframe computer with the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Companies in Roanoke, Virginia for five years. Thereafter, he attended law school at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Mr. Carlton earned his Juris Doctor Degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in the Spring of 1992.
Mr. Carlton is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the bankruptcy section of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the bankruptcy section of the Virginia Bar Association, and the Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Bar Association. He is a member of the Shenandoah Valley chapter of the Southern Cruisers motorcycle club and serves as the “Legal Tender Trustee” for the chapter club. He is a member of Memorial Baptist church and sings bass in the adult choir. He is a prior member of the board of directors for the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and served as President for two years. He is a former member of The Autism Program of Virginia and served on their parent advisory board for several years. He is a former member of the Kiwanis Club and Rotary club. Mr. Carlton has also served in the past as an adjunct professor for several years at both James Madison University and Blue Ridge Community College teaching courses in business law.
Mr. Carlton has been strongly committed to the practice of bankruptcy law for his 19 year legal career, but he is a slightly different type of lawyer. He rarely wears a tie to his office, except on court days, and he often meets clients wearing white tennis shoes. He has personally written a large number of computer programs which he and his staff use at Carlton Legal Services, PLC. He rides an orange and black motorcycle to the office and he often rides the motorcycle to Court while wearing a full dress suit. He enjoys riding his motorcycle and bicycle on weekends, playing tennis, taking long walks, and snow skiing during the winter. Mr. Carlton loves dogs and owns a young Boston Terrier named Bandit. Mr. Carlton and his wife Ellen chose to reside in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1994 and have resided here with their three children for over 17 years.
